PTC Resettable Fuses are widely used in protecting electronic devices against damage due to abnormal current surge or over current. LR4-380SSF is a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resettable fuse, it uses a resistor material to construct a polymeric PTC element, when the rated current was applied, the temperature of the part rises due to Joule heating, once the temperature rises above the rated temperature, it will cause a rapid increase in resistance, in turn, resulting in reduced current flow and decreased power dissipations until it returns to its initial state, this is the cycle of the fuse.
The LR4-380SSF has a wide range of application fields, such as industrial equipment, consumer electronics, communication devices, automotive systems, etc. It has excellent surge protection capability, it can eliminate overload up to 4A, provide very fast short-circuit protection and steady state protection during normal operation.
The working principle of LR4-380SSF is as followed. In normal operating conditions, when the current is below the rated current, the fuse maintains a low internal resistance and allows current to flow in normal operation, while in abnormal conditions, such as when the current exceeds the rated current, the temperature of the part rises due to Joule heating and the resistance rises rapidly until it reaches a high value. This in turn reduces the current flow and decreases the power dissipation, thus protecting the underlying circuits from damage due to over-current.
The LR4-380SSF is also designed to be able to reset itself, when the current is back to normal, the heat of the part decreases and the resistance goes back to its initial state, meanwhile the fuse also turns back on, allowing current to flow as usual and the device to operate normally.
