LT1304CS8-3.3#TRPBF - DC DC Switching RegulatorsThe LT1304CS8-3.3#TRPBF is a fixed-frequency current-mode synchronous buck (step-down) DC-DC switching regulator with an adjustable operating frequency up to 2 MHz and is capable of driving up to 3.3A of output current with a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 40 V. This regulator is well suited for powering low-voltage ASICs, such as DSPs, DIMMs, memory stacks, logic, or other circuits requiring multiple voltage rails. It offers a high switching frequency and synchronous rectified design that reduces external component count as well as its own footprint. Its low dropout voltage operation allows the regulator to continue to produce output power even during low load conditions.

The LT1304CS8-3.3#TRPBF operates on the basic principle of a DC-DC buck converter. When an input voltage is applied to the multiplexed pins VIN and VIN_SEL, the voltage is regulated and converted to a desired output voltage at the output pins VOUT and VOUT_SEL. First, the input voltage is applied to the top switch of the buck converter, which turns the switch on and starts to build up an inductor current iL1. This current is limited to the selected output current IOUT by the current-mode control scheme. At the same time, the output voltage VOUT is forced to the desired value by comparing it to the voltage at the error amplifier output VAE. When the switch turns off, the inductor current iL1 is passed through the output diode to the output capacitor and eventually to the load. While the output capacitor is discharging, the bottom switch is turned on and the process repeats. This is the basic operation of a DC-DC buck converter.To improve efficiency, the LT1304CS8-3.3#TRPBF uses synchronous rectification for the bottom half of the switch, meaning that it does not use a diode for the bottom switch like a standard buck converter. This way, power loss due to the diode forward voltage is eliminated. The regulator also uses a fixed frequency oscillator to regulate the frequency of the switching on and off of the switches. The output voltage is adjusted by changing the period of the oscillator, so that the output capacitance is completely discharged before the switch turns off.Conclusion
