Linear Technology\'s LT1786FCS#TRPBF provides a power management solution for a wide range of applications that require regulated voltage outputs, such as industrial systems, communications systems and automotive applications. As a low dropout, fast response, low noise, low ripple and high power density DC/DC converter, this device supports output voltage adjustment from 1.2V to 5.5V, and achieves a low quiescent current of 2.5mA. The device has a high efficiency of up to 96%, high power density, and low ripple and noise. In addition, it provides a host of features such as overtemperature protection and active current limit.
LT1786FCS#TRPBF Working Principle
The LT1786FCS#TRPBF regulating PWM operated dc-dc converter is based on an indirect control concept that provides an ideal circuit solution for wide input voltage range and stable output power supply. The regulator is composed of an error amplifier, a reference and a PWM comparator. When the current alternates between two extreme values, the error amplifier compares the reference voltage with the output voltage of the voltage feedback pin and sends the error signal to the PWM comparator. The PWM comparator then adjusts the PWM signal according to the error signals, and the pulse width of the PWM signal is modulated to control the amount of current in the inductor. After the inductor stores energy, it discharges and direct current is delivered to the load. When the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the PWM signal\'s pulse width is shortened so as to reduce the output current which helps to stabilize the output. And when the output voltage drops below the reference voltage, the PWM signal\'s pulse width will lengthen so as to increase the output current and increase the output voltage to the reference voltage level.
The error amplifier functions as a feedback regulator to adjust the amount of current and keep the output voltage at the reference voltage level. It takes the output voltage as the input, then adjusts the PWM signal output so as to keep the output voltage stable. The output voltage is consists of three parts: the reference voltage, the current level and the maximum input voltage. The range of output voltage can be adjusted from 1.2V to 5.5V by setting the reference voltage, and the output voltage will drop in proportion to the load current, which can protect the circuit.
