LTC2871IFE is a low power, low noise, high performance RS-485 transceiver from Linear Technology’s I-Flex family of bus transceivers. For most applications, the LTC2871IFE does not require a driver and can be used with microcontroller’s standard SPI port. The LTC2871IFE is designed to reduce power consumption and reduce radiated noise in noisy environments like automotive, avionics and medical environments.The LTC2871IFE offers robust noise immunity and common mode range of up to ±26V, making it suited for harsh industrial environments. It is an ideal choice for isolated RS-485 applications, offering good EMC compliance and meeting the EN61182-1 immune levels. The device is multi-voltage compatible and integrates a +/-15kV isolation barrier to protect sensitive bus devices in the event of system faults.

Working Principle

The LTC2871IFE is a full-duplex transceiver operating on a single supply of 4.5-16V and features active input protection (+/-30V). The transceiver features adjustable and programmable data rate from 2.5Mbps down to 12.5kbps as well as transmit disable, receive disable and one-way transmit features.The device features an innovative adjustable slew rate control that enables the user to select between a fast, high noise immunity slew rate or a slow, low EMI/EMC signature slew rate. The LTC2871IFE can operate for up to 16Mbps (SR = 0.0V) and down to 12.5kbps (SR = 5V) without adding additional bias networks.The LTC2871IFE also features a wide common-mode voltage tolerance of up to ±26V and high impedance differential inputs, both of which are essential for industrial robustness. In addition, the device also supports hot swap operation, ensuring that the bus is isolated even when hot-plugging in new devices.The transceiver is also designed to reduce power consumption by integrating common DC/DC bypass capacitors that decrease switching losses and quiescent current, which makes it ideal for digital power control applications. Finally, the device features short-term current limit protection and under voltage lockout, making it suitable for automotive and avionics applications.
