The LTC3499EMS8#PBF voltage regulator is a monolithic DC-DC switching regulator optimized for powering portable systems from a single cell Li-Ion battery. It integrates a low RDS(ON) MOSFET, a power switch controller, a 600mA ideal diode, a programmable soft-start, a 0.8V precision reference, an adjustable frequency PWM controller and a thermal shutdown circuit that monitors the chip temperature. The current mode architecture of this device enables use of very low cost external components, resulting in an optimized cost design that is quick to assemble and easy to certify.Application Field
The LTC3499EMS8#PBF is ideal for powering cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, portable disk drives, Bluetooth radios and other battery-powered systems with wide input voltage ranges. It provides excellent load and line regulation with a minimum of external components and can drive loads up to 600mA from a single Li-Ion battery. The voltage regulator has built-in protection against current or voltage overloads and has integrated load disconnect circuitry to preserve charge in the battery in shutdown. The device can be used for both main power supplies and for backup supplies such as emergency lighting, emergency vehicles, etc. It also has a wide array of applications in automotive and home theater systems as a main or sub-system power supply, offering very extensive protection features. Furthermore, its wide input voltage range makes it ideal for applications such as point-of-load converters, i.e. it can be used to provide power with isolation from the source while minimizing power wasted in line transitions and filter losses. The LTC3499EMS8#PBF is available in different design variations to satisfy different needs and requirements.Working Principle
The LTC3499EMS8#PBF is based on a switched-mode voltage regulator with an internal current-mode Switchmode controller IC, a synchronous rectifier FET, and an external Schottky diode. The IC controls the switching operations of the MOSFET, which in turn controls the voltage output. This voltage is regulated by the on-time signal and by the feedback loop.When the voltage output is is undershoot, the VFB voltage drops and the control signal is increased, therefore increasing the MOSFET on-time and thus increasing the output voltage. Similarly, when the voltage output is overshooting, the control signal is decreased, so decreasing the MOSFET on-time and decreasing the output voltage.This voltage regulating loop is closed by Feedback (VFB) signal, which uses a voltage divider created with external resistors to regulate the output voltage. The VFB is compared to the reference voltage both during start up and normal operation, beginning with the voltage set by the voltage divider, and then monitoring the output voltage and compensating to maintain the desired level.The current mode architecture of the LTC3499EMS8#PBF eliminates the need for large filter components, since the peak currents that flow through the inductor during switching are inherently regulated. This allows for very low ripple and quick transient response. A separate external Output Sync pin provides synchronization across multiple regulators, allowing for very low ripple across multiple outputs. The dynamic sync feature is available for both primary and secondary regulators, allowing for even greater ripple elimination. The internal current limit circuit and thermal shutdown protection makes the device safe to use, and efficient use of power. The device is also provided with input protection against overvoltage, reverse voltage and short circuits, making it reliable and highly advantageous when used in combination with other PMIC devices. To sum up, the LTC3499EMS8#PBF voltage regulator is perfect for a wide variety of applications, thanks to its features such as current-mode architecture, low component count, low ripple and wide input voltage range.
