Working Principle

LTC6803IG-1#TRPBF monitors and protects up to 8 Li-Ion or Li-Polymer cells with temperature, voltage, capacity and overall cell protection features. The IC contains integrated Self-Trim features which self-adjusts the reference voltage and current threshold settings. This allows the IC to detect and respond to various cell characteristics that may affect battery performance. The IC also features an onboard voltage filter and over-threshold logic, which protects the cells from over-charge, over-discharge, short-circuit and excessive temperature. The IC has an internal logic structure which enables it to determine the state of the battery, i.e. full, discharged or charging, and provides several signal outputs which can be used by the host processor for monitoring and/or control of the battery.

If the input current is above or below set thresholds, the IC will signal the processor to initiate any necessary action to protect the battery.

The IC can also be used as an active cell balancing system as it can detect imbalances in cell voltage, temperature and/or current. The IC contains an integrated cell balancing circuit which automatically balances the cells by disconnecting and reconnecting one or more cells at a time. By doing this, it ensures equal voltage and current between all cells and therefore, the maximum battery life.
