Working Principle

The VCO is connected to the R SET resistor that program the frequency range of the oscillator. It can accurately control the frequency from 24kHz up to 80MHz .

The current-starved oscillator used in the LTC6930 consists of an active circuit element, an operational transconductance amplifier (OTA), —often referred to as a “current-starved loop.” An external capacitor and a variable resistor, R SET , forms an LC tank circuit with the OTA, and the VCO is driven by the current-starved OTA. The main advantage of a current-starved oscillator is that the spectral noise introduced by the oscillator core is negligible compared to the thermal noise of components in the loop filter.

When modulating the frequency, the R SET resistor is adjusted, creating a frequency shift in the oscillator. According to Ohm’s law, the resistance, when given a certain voltage, is equal to the voltage divided by the current. When the voltage applied to the VCO buffer, the current flowing through R SET is proportional to the voltage and causes the frequency of the oscillation to shift inversely with the resistance over a given range. This makes it easy to adjust and control the frequency, as the voltage can easily be programmed to a specific range.
