Working Principle

The LTM8032MPY consists of a low dropout linear regulator (LDO) and a high-side mosfet switch. The LDO provides a regulated output voltage from a wide input voltage range. The high-side mosfet switch is used to control the output current. When the load current increases, the high-side mosfet will turn off and a pulse-width modulation (PWM) control is used to keep the output voltage in a pre-determined range. When the voltage across the mosfet exceeds the threshold voltage, current sensing between the high-side mosfet and the output side of the LDO will activate the PWM control. A pulse width is selected to maintain the output current at a desired level. The output voltage is then regulated by the LDO and the feedback loop. The LTM8032MPY also provides adjustable over-current and over-temperature protection. The over-current protection (OCP) is adjustable up to 4 times the nominal current for surge protection. The over-temperature protection (OTP) is adjustable to 120C. Both the OCP and OTP are adjustable through external resistors.
