Optoisolators are a type of component that isolate two circuits electrically but allow them to interact optically. Amongst them, the LTV-817M is an optocoupler that uses a transistor at the output stage to enhance its signal switching capabilities. This component has widespread application in areas such as sensor feedback, switching control signals and logic circuits.
The LTV-817M consists of an infrared emitting diode optically coupled to a photoconductive cell. The diode is a light emitting device which helps to activate the photoconductive cell. The photoconductive cell, which is typically a bipolar transistor is connected in the circuit as a switch with its gate voltage being controlled by the light emitted from the LED. When no light is emitted from the LED, the output of the cell is OFF and when the LED emits light the output voltage isturned ON.
In terms of physical structure, the LTV-817M is a four pin optocoupler with the following pins in order: Anode, Cathode, Collector and Emitter. The Anode and Cathode pins are used to connect the LED; the Collector and Emitter pins are connected to the photoconductive cell, which is configured as a switch. When the LED receives input power, light is emitted which brings about the device’s switching action. As a result, the Collector and Emitter pins are in a “closed” state with a high resistance between them.
This optocoupler is extremely effective in terms of electrical isolation. The two circuits are completely electrically isolated when it is in static state. This helps to isolate and protect the sensitive circuits from being affected by high frequency noise which could damage it.
In addition, the LTV-817M is also suitable for applications such as driving small motors, for example in intelligent cameras or ATM machines, that require isolation, signal speed and reliable power switching. The optocoupler can switch power up to its rated current which is 300mA, and it can also detect signals up to a frequency of 10KHz. This makes it suitable for a variety of logic circuits or devices that require pulse signal detection.
Overall, the LTV-817M optocoupler provides excellent isolation and reliable switching capabilities. It is a great component for providing feedback signals for sensors, controlling switching in logic circuits and providing an efficient and reliable connection between two circuits without the need for extra components.
