They are anodized aluminum cylindrical or rectangular devices that have an electrolyte in the form of a solid polymer dielectric charge made of a material that allows for a greater surface area than a traditional electrolyte. The current carriers passing through the anode cause it to become polarized, the surface of the anode becoming negative and the other side positive, thus creating a double layer of electric charge on the outside of the dielectric. This double layer effect causes capacitance, and when current flows, an electric field is created that enables current to be stored. To release electric charge, a reverse voltage must be applied, allowing the current carriers to move in the opposite direction.
