Tantalum capacitors are ceramic capacitors made of tantalum. They are usually of the two-terminal type, often featuring a relatively high capacitance per unit volume compared to other ceramic capacitors. One of the most commonly used tantalum capacitors is the M551B418K006AS. It is an advanced tantalum-polymer capacitor that offers excellent performance in temperature stability, temperature cycle and vibration. This action causes a "storing up" of charge, which is then released as the voltage is removed, creating a currrent flow.
Tantalum-polymer capacitors are more reliable than ceramic capacitors due to their particular working principle and construction; the electrode terminals are encapsulated within a polymer film, designed to offer greater mechanical robustness and moisture protection compared to conventional ceramic capacitors. Additionally, the polymer electrolyte provides excellent surface insulation, enabling the use of thin films, and thus resulting in a much lower physical height of the capacitor.
Tantalum-polymer capacitors also feature very low equivalent series resistance (ESR), typically around 10% to 15% of the value for an equivalent tantalum capacitor. This property is determined by the capacitors’ construction and electrolyte composition, with the use of a highly conductive tantalum-polymer electrolyte allowing for decreased device impedances and greater power handling capabilities.
