The MAL218097601E3 aluminum - polymer capacitors utilizes a three-terminal design and two solid conductors (anode and cathode), which are connected by a flex-gate oxide. The oxide forms an electric field between the anode and cathode, dubbed the "depolarization layer". This layer is created by the application of a specific voltage to the capacitor.

The anode is connected to the flex-gate oxide and when an electrical signal is applied to the anode, it pushes its electrons through the oxide layer to the cathode. This causes an accumulation of electrical charge on the electrodes, increase in the potential difference, which creates an electric field between the anode and cathode. This in turn initiates the encoding process, which enables the capacitor to store charge. The charge stored remains constant until the electrical signal changes.
