The MAX487ESA-T is an RS-485/RS-422 transceiver designed for balanceddata communications in multipoint systems. It provides differential transmit andreceive capability for lossless data communication up to 120kbps, over ageneral-purpose, unshielded, twisted-pair cable. This transceiver is designed totolerate extended common-mode voltage ranges, while maintaining compliancewith the standard EIA/TIA-485 electrical specifications.

The MAX487ESA-T is supplied in a space-saving 16-pin surface-mountpackage. The MAX487ESA-T includes a low-power shutdown mode, and the logiclevels of the receiver enable pins WINH and WINL are compatible with CMOS,TTL, and 5-V PLC logic.

The MAX487ESA-T application field is for communication in serial networks,such as Industrial and Building Automation, Instrumentation, SecuritySystems, Data Acquisition Systems, RS-485 and Multiprocessors Networks, PowerManagement, as well as Household and Office Automation.

The MAX487ESA-T working principle is to transmit and receive digitaldata signals on a single twisted-pair cable, such as RS-485 differentialbus. The bus transmits data with one driver and one receiver, or withseveral drivers and one receiver, in multipoint networks. When transmitting,the driver outputs two complementary signals. This differential outputvoltage is independent of the common mode voltage, and is unaffected bytelephone crosstalk, power line disturbances, and other transmitted interferencesources.

Data is latched on the receive A and B pins when the receiver detects awell-defined transition point. The differential receiver input resistanceis high enough to reject any common-mode noise up to ±25V. The MAX487ESA-Tthus provides superior noise immunity and common-mode rejection thanTTL/CMOS line receivers.

When transmitting, the driver has an open-circuit output voltage up to ±25V.By programming with the receiver\'s WINH and WINL logic pins, transmitterscan switch to half- or partial-duplex modes for bidirectional communi-cation over a single pair of wires.

The MAX487ESA-T provides selectable slew-rate limiters for minimizing the errorgenerated by cable reflections. This feature ensures high noise immunityformultipoint applications and allows error-free data transmission overlong cables.

The MAX487ESA-T is widely used in community power networks, communicationnetworks, industrial field bus systems and process control. Moreover,it can be used in computer networks, medical device networks, vehicle net-works, aircraft systems, railway control networks, and ammunition controlsystems.
