The MAX6008AESA+ is a high-performance precision very low-dropout (VLDO) linear regulator for mobile, computer, and consumer-level applications on a minimum of board space. This component is part of the voltage reference class of PMIC products. An integrated circuit (IC) voltage regulator is a device that supplies a constant output voltage regardless of variations in the input voltage and load current. The ubiquity and low cost of the MAX6008AESA+ makes it popular for low voltage power applications such as cellphone, laptop and desktop computers, navigation systems, and consumer-level peripherals.

In theory, the goal of the voltage regulator is to convert an input of variable magnitude and waveform to a controlled output of predetermined magnitude and waveform, but in practice its job is to maintain the output voltage of the regulated supply within extremeClose tolerances while loading conditions change. To accomplish this, the voltage reference regulator must provide accurate voltage control, high current driving capability, fast transient response, and low power consumption. It must also be able to regulate the output voltage with good line and load regulation over specified input voltage and loading condition range. The MAX6008AESA+ is a linear regulator circuit for this purpose.

The MAX6008AESA+ features a low quiescent current of 3.6 mA and a low output voltage drop of 0.6 V across input and output voltages from 2.7 V to 6.5 V. This results in a high power efficiency of up to 95%. The device also includes a power good (ECG) output that indicates the output voltage is within 5% of the desired voltage. In addition, the MAX6008AESA+ features an adjustable three-stage current-limit system that protects against load-induced over-currents. The device also offers fast start-up, low output noise, and a maximum output current of 200 mA.

The MAX6008AESA+ is a single-supply voltage regulator that operates with a 2.7 V to 6.5 V input voltage range. When the input voltage is lower than your output voltage, that is, when you are drawing power from the battery, the integrated circuit maintains the output voltage within close limits by accepting current from the input node of the device and routing it to ground. This current is then limited to the maximum current rating of the device, thus protecting the device from overloads. Additionally, the device has an adjustable current limit feature that allows the power consumption to be incrementally adjusted.

Other features of the MAX6008AESA+ include a low quiescent current of 3.6 mA, a low output voltage drop, a power good output indication for monitoring the status of the output, and a maximum output power rating of 200 mA. Additionally, the device includes specially formulated internal compensation, which enables both fast transient response and small capacitance requirements. The combination of these features provides the user with a high-performance, space-saving and reliable voltage regulator solution.

The MAX6008AESA+ is an ideal fit in a variety of small, low-power regulated voltage supplies, with applications widely covering the entire mobile, computer and consumer electronics segment. For example, the device can be used as a low-cost and low-power solution to power the baseband or transceiver of a mobile phone, or as an internal power supply rail for laptop computers.
