The MAX6946ATE+ is a highly integrated per-channel LED driver for green and red LED displays. It is part of the PMIC - LED Drivers industry family. The MAX6946ATE+ LED Driver provides 32 separate LED channels, divided into 16 channels (group 1) capable of 5mA supply current and 16 channels (group 2) capable of 3mA supply current. It is specifically designed to drive the high-row count LED displays with a small number of pins and stores 16 overlapping PWM levels in 8×8 display grids.
The MAX6946ATE+ offers a highly integrated approach that not only simplifies PC board layout, it also helps to reduce component count and cost. The power supply for this device is 5V and its operating temperature range is -40°C up to +85°C. It is available in a 25-Pin, TQFP-EP package (EP = Exposed Pad).

This allows the display to turn off even though data and clock are present. This is useful in a bright environment where the user might want to dim the LED display and to turn it on and off without the need of an external control signal.
