Maxim integrated\'s MAX6964AEG+ is a complete charge-pump-based, white-LED driver IC used in displays and lighting applications. This device features integrated current switches, a low-power shutdown mode, programmable current limit and current slew rate control.

The MAX6964AEG+ has an operating voltage range of 2.4V to 5.5V, with a typical input current of 1mA. It regulates one or more LEDs from display backlight applications and can drive up to 10 LEDs from a 6.5Vto 25V supply.

Working Principle

The MAX6964AEG+ utilizes a unique charge-pump topology to regulate the current for every single LED. The device borrows and stores charge from one capacitor and releases it to the other. These two capacitors are connected in a closed loop and the current through each LED is regulated.

The MAX6964AEG+ integrates two current switches, one diode and two voltage regulators. The current switches are used to set the adjustable gain of the charge pump circuit. The diode provides the discharge current slowly to the LED string and the voltage regulators provide the reference voltage.

The adjustable current switching frequency allows one to adjust the LED current between the ac alternation of the LED and the internal logic, depending on the application.
