PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is an integrated circuit that helps to manage and distribute power within an electronic system. Among the different types of PMICs available, LED drivers are used to regulate the current or voltage supplied to the LEDs in order to achieve a desired level of brightness. The MAX6965AEE+ is a buck LED driver IC that is suitable for driving medium to high power LEDs in general LED lighting applications such as LED downlighting and LED signage.
The MAX6965AEE+ LED driver employs a buck regulator topology whereby the input power is step-down from the supply voltage to the LED voltage. It consists of a synchronous rectifier, a Schottky diode, a buck converter, and a current sense amplifier. The main components of the MAX6965AEE+ are depicted in Figure 1.

The synchronous rectifier is a power MOSFET, i.e. an electronic switch, which is used to control the current across the LED. The synchronous rectifier acts as a low impedance path for the current to flow through the LEDs and allows the desired amount of current to pass through the LED, thus providing the desired level of brightness. The Schottky diode is used to divert the current away from the LED when the MOSFET is switched off. Finally, the buck converter is used to transform the supply voltage to the required LED voltage, while the current sense amplifier helps to detect the current flowing through the LED.
The MAX6965AEE+ can operate in two different modes to drive the LEDs. The first is the constant current mode, wherein the driver applies a constant current and provides the same light output even when the supply voltage or LED forward voltage varies. The second is the voltage control mode, wherein the constant source voltage is applied to the LEDs and the current is monitored and adjusted accordingly. The outputs are proportional to the supply voltage and the regulation of current can be controlled from an external resistor.
The MAX6965AEE+ also provides a range of current levels and dimming functions for adjustable brightness levels. It is available in the 3mm x 3mm package and operates at a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Its main features and specifications are listed in Table 1.
