The MAX843ISA+ is a 3.2A duty cycle-controlled DC/DC converter designed for portable electronics systems. It packs high performance and reliability into a tiny 5 x 5 mm plastic QFN package. The MAX843ISA+ features a fixed-frequency, peak current mode control with internal soft start and over-current protection. Output voltage is adjustable to within ±2.5% of nominal.
A unique internal shunt regulator (ISR) improves the output voltage accuracy and ensures that the output voltage does not exceed the input in case of short circuit of the output terminal. The MAX843ISA+ provides 2-MHz switching frequency, wide switching frequency adjustment range, and high frequency synchronization. The MAX843ISA+ also features a high efficiency 99.2% peak, allowing a smaller inductor and smaller overall solution size.
The application range of the MAX843ISA+ makes it one of the most suitable voltage regulator available in the special purpose voltage regulator category. It can be used in a number of applications such as power management for cellular phones, portable media players, satellite and cable TV set-top boxes. The low dropout voltage also enables the device to provide a high degree of conversion efficiency with low input voltage. The device is adjustable from 5V to 40V with a 3.2A max switch current. It also offers an adjustable soft start time and very low shutdown current.
The working principle of the MAX843ISA+ is based on a current-mode step-down regulator, which is also known as buck converter. This type of converter is used for stepping down the input voltage to a desired output voltage. The current-mode step-down regulator works by controlling the duty-cycle of the switching using an internally integrated circuit. This type of regulator has superior performance and more efficient than the more traditional voltage-mode step-down converter.
The switching topology of the MAX843ISA+ is based on the level-shifted synchronous-rectified buck converter. It is optimized for low switching losses while providing a wide output voltage range.
