The MAX8537EVKIT is an evaluation board designed for use with the MAX8537, a pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller ideal for DC/DC and AC/DC offline switch-mode power supply (SMPS) designs. The MAX8537EVKIT offers a complete set of circuit components to demonstrate the IC’s many features while taking full advantage of its programmability to optimize conversion efficiency for a wide range of applications from DC/DC converters to AC/DC inverters.

The MAX8537EVKIT features a simple three-channel circuit design for controlling DC/DC converter output voltage. Each channel allows direct control of the output voltage. It can be used for a variety of power supplies, including off-line switchers, DC/DC converters, transformers, motor controllers, voltage regulators, and other general-purpose power supplies. It can also be used to create solutions for the automotive, computing, lighting, and portable device industries. In addition, the board is also suitable for battery charging and other applications.

The MAX8537EVKIT makes it easy to evaluate the efficiency of this controller in a variety of applications. As a result, it allows users to compare energy efficiency in different topologies and determine the most suitable topology and design for a given application. It enables designers to get started quickly and easily by eliminating the need to select and assemble components on a PCB, while also giving them confidence that their design will work reliably.

The MAX8537IC provides three different operating modes. In the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) mode, the current is regulated to a predetermined level, providing excellent efficiency under light to medium loads, while in the Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM)mode, the frequency is increased in order to maintain constant voltage regulation. In the Forced Continuous Conduction (FCC) mode, the frequency is kept constant while the current is increased to keep the converter running at full load.

The working principle of the MAX8537EVKIT is based on two external sense resistors and two adjustable voltage references. The first voltage reference is used to set the output voltage and the second one is used to limit the output voltage or current. The output voltage is connected to the input through a low-loss diode and the current mode control circuit. The MAX8537IC in the MAX8537EVKIT detects the output voltage by measuring the voltage drop across the sense resistors and then compares it with the internal reference. The adjustments of the two references allow the user to find the optimum design for the application and to save power in light loads.

To further enhance the design of the MAX8537EVKIT, it also includes other features such as adjustable soft-start, adaptive on-time, dynamic voltage scaling, current limit, and over-temperature protection, allowing the user to customize their design to optimize efficiency or minimize noise.
