Introduction

MAX8553EEE+T is an adjustable low RDS(ON) 30 A current-mode synchronous step-down voltage regulator. It is a chip-scale version of MAX8553ET+, with minimal external components and optimized design. It is powered with a built-in boost switch and integrated power MOSFET, which allows it to provide a voltage output of 0.8V with applications in computer peripherals, mobile devices and other high power-level designs.

Application Field

MAX8553EEE+T can easily be used in low current/high current applications such as computer peripherals, mobile devices, battery management systems, as well as in high power-level designs. It provides efficient power conversion with its integrated two 25 mΩ power MOSFETs and its 0.6V lower ESR than its ancestor (the MAX8553ET+). The device uses current-mode control system and features logic-controlled frequency operation. Its low profile package design helps reduce the inductance and EMI/RFI for computer peripherals and mobile devices. The device also has a set of features such as integrated ESD protection and a wide output current range up to 30 A. It is designed with a synchronous rectifier configuration to maximize power efficiency while minimizing current ripple.

Working Principle

The MAX8553EEE+T adopts a current-mode control system. It has an adjustable voltage-feedback loop, which is used to regulate the output voltage to the predetermined value. The output voltage is regulated by a voltage referenced at the feedback pin. The control system monitors the output voltage and adjust the duty-cycle of the synchronous FETs on the fly in order to maintain the output voltage to the desired level. The device also has an integrated boost switch, which controls the boost voltage required for power-up the IC, which allows the device to run at low input voltages e.g. from 2V.
