The MAX856CUA+ is a monolithic DC/DC synchronous buck converter designed for applications such as general-purpose distributed power systems, microwave radio systems, automotive systems, FPGA/ASIC core supplies and digital logic supplies. The MAX856CUA+ operates at a switching frequency of up to 500kHz, allowing smaller inductors to be used compared to other available solutions, resulting in a compact solution size.

Working Principle

The MAX856CUA+ is a synchronous buck converter that uses the PWM technique to step down an input voltage to the required output voltage.The device operates in two phases. First, the current in the inductor is ramped up during the ON phase of the controller; this is the “charging” phase. During this phase, the controller drives a high-side MOSFET from the IN pin to the output pin OUT. In the second phase, the current in the inductor is ramped down and is reversed during the OFF phase of the controller; this is the “discharging” phase. During this phase, the controller drives a low-side MOSFET from the OUT pin to the GND pin in order to discharge the stored energy in the inductor to the output capacitor. In this way, energy is transferred from the input to the output, thus regulating the output voltage according to the input voltage.
