WORKING PRINCIPLE:

The MAX868EUB+ working principle involves two voltage input pins, one for the input voltage, and another for the output voltage. Every time the input voltage drops below the reference voltage output, a pulse is sent to the high side MOSFET switch and forces it to turn off. This disconnects the input voltage pin from the high side of the MOSFET switch and the low side of the MOSFET switch is then connected to a resistor, which is connected to ground.

The low side of the MOSFET switch is also connected to a second voltage input pin and the low side MOSFET switch is connected to the output voltage pin. When the input voltage rises above the reference voltage output, the pulse stream is reversed, forcing the low side MOSFET switch to turn on and the output voltage pin to be connected to the input voltage pin. This causes the input voltage to be fed to the output voltage pin and the output voltage rises accordingly.

The heat generated by the MAX868EUB+ is minimized because the switching of the MOSFET switch is done very quickly. This switching is done over a thousand times a second, which causes the MAX868EUB+ to get extremely hot if the input voltage is too high. To prevent this, the MAX868EUB+ has built-in thermal protection which shuts off the device if the internal temperature exceeds a certain level.
