The MAX8720ETX+ is a +1.8V to +5.5V low-dropout linear regulator with an I2C-compatible digital-controlled interface capable of both step-down voltage and a programmable series of adjustable output voltage levels. This special purpose voltage regulator is designed for power management applications requiring the highest levels of accuracy, flexibility, and ruggedness. The MAX8720ETX+ is available in an 11-pin, 4mm x 4mm, 0.5mm pitch, TQFN package.

MAX8720ETX+ Working Principle

In a typical application, the MAX8720ETX+ voltage regulator provides several programmable output voltage levels in the range of +0.7V to +4.4V. The output voltage is set through the external I2C interface, which can select one of 32 different voltage settings in 25mV increments. Selection of the appropriate output voltage is made maximally simple, as the I2C slave address and other operating parameters are specified via the MAX8720ETX+’s ancillary pins before the regulator is powered up.

The MAX8720ETX+ regulator features an adjustable current limit, which may be set through the I2C interface. When the load current exceeds the current limit, the device will automatically shut down and enter a current-limited state. The device may be commanded back into normal operation by issuing a "shutdown" command via the I2C interface. This feature allows maximum overall system efficiency, as extra power is not drawn when more current is not required to be drawn by the load.

The MAX8720ETX+ also features a built-in thermal shutdown feature. When the die temperature exceeds a certain threshold, the voltage regulator will automatically shut down, enter a low-power state, and will return to normal operation when the die temperature cools down.

The MAX8720ETX+ is designed to ensure a high level of power supply accuracy and has an output voltage accuracy of ±1.8%. This high precision is achieved by a combination of features, such as voltage-error amplitude modulation and digital current limit control, which results in a dynamic, stable, and low-noise output.
