MAX8729EEI+ is a powerful 5V, 3.2A, 76mΩ synchronous rectifier buck controller that provides exceptional efficiency and small size, allowing the designer to deliver the highest performance in a small form factor. The device supports an adapter form factor with a wide-range AC input voltage, which eliminates the need for a PFC stage in high power adapters. The device delivers > 3.2A continuous output with excellent transient response at a junction temperature of 90°C.

Most importantly, MAX8729EEI+ is a PMIC (Power Management IC), which is a device that efficiently manages power on a system level. It integrates a wide array of power supply components that can include DC-DC converters (voltage regulators, charge pumps and controllers), linear regulators, LV posistors or MOSFETs. In addition to integrated control, monitoring, and diagnostic functions, it also supports a wide variety of communication buses such as PMBus, SMBus, and I2C.

This functionality is designed to enable a fast, smooth, and controlled turn-on power up to the load, so that the system is not subjected to any inrush current during that process. The current limit feature prevents excessive flow of current through the MOSFET, by providing a foldback current limit feature that reduces the load current to a safe level and preventing damage.

At its heart, the MAX8729EEI+ is a voltage mode synchronous buck controller, which allows for adjustable output voltage between 1.2V and 26V. The device works by accepting a DC input voltage, typically from an adapter, and generating an adjustable output voltage by controlling the conduction time of the MOSFET switch. This control technique is based upon varying the duty cycle of the switching MOSFET, to achieve the desired output voltage and current.

The device also includes a pre-biased output voltage module. This feature automatically bias-in the output capacitor, eliminating the need for an external bias resistor and saving cost and board space. In addition, the device incorporates smart protection features such as the integrated overtemperature protection, overvoltage protection, and undervoltage protection.
