MAX8778ETJ+T Application Field and Working Principle
MAX8778ETJ+T, part of the range of DC DC Switching Regulators from PMIC, is designed for applications with a wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 28V, for processor core and memory supplies. This low-dropout (LDO) regulator provides excellent line and load regulation and delivers a maximum output current of 1.5A with high efficiency performance over a wide temperature range.The MAX8778ETJ+T is ideal for point of load (POL) Regulation in processor and memory applications, particularly those that are sensitive to the power-supply noise, as it provides high current accuracy, excellent line and load regulation, and high efficiency performance over a wide temperature range. The chip also employs a variety of features, such as programmable soft start, output over-voltage protection, output under-voltage protection, and output over-current protection, all of which can be configured through the I2C interface.The chip is packaged in the thermally enhanced 4- lead TDFN-EP (exposed pad) package. This package contains two horizontal signal pins with the die pad exposed, enabling superior heat dissipation. The chip is available in two different package types: 4-Lead TDFN-EP (exposed pad) and 3-Lead DFN. The chip is tested and qualified for automotive applications. The chip operates from an input voltage range of 4.5V to 28V, and is capable of providing 1.5A maximum current. The rated output current is adjustable from 0.1mA up to 1.5A with 0.6% accuracy, with a tolerance of 0.5A. The chip boasts a wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, making it ideal for automotive applications.The chip has three different modes of operation: OFF, Standby, and Normal Mode. In OFF Mode, the chip is disabled and no current flows through it. In Standby Mode, the chip is in a low power mode and only basic functions like monitoring input supply level and over temperature are operational. Finally, in Normal Mode, the chip is in full working condition and is actively monitoring the load and adjusting output voltage to maintain the required level.The device supports a wide range of features and protection mechanisms such as Short Circuit/ Over Current Protection (SCP/OCP), Output Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), Output Under-Voltage Protection (UVP), and Programmable Soft start (PSS). The chip also incorporates an adjustable voltage accuracy feature with tolerance of 0.6% that allows it to be configured to the desired voltage levels. High power-conversion efficiency is one of the major benefits of the MAX8778ETJ+T. The device features high efficiency at both light and full load conditions, with efficiency peaking up to 95%. It also features high efficiency of up to 93% at light load conditions. With the Low ESR ceramic capacitors, high conversion efficiency with low ripple can be achieved. The DC DC Switching Regulator offered by PMIC, when integrated with the MAX8778ETJ+T chip, offer a complete solution for core and memory applications. The device is ideal for point of load (POL) applications where high current accuracy and excellent line and load regulation are of paramount importance.
