The MAX8784EVKIT+ evaluation board is a small, highly efficient, low power AC-DC and DC-DC power supply designed to accelerate the development of low power, energy efficient electronic products. This board showcases the MAX8784 integrated circuit (IC) and provides a platform for exploring power supply design, powering system-level components, and testing various proof-of-concept boards. The evaluation board uses the MAX8784’s high-efficiency synchronous architecture to generate power near 1W, 2W, 3W, 4W, 5W, and 6W maximum load power levels with the 2x2 mm, 10-pin MAX8784 IC.
The MAX8784 present on the evaluation Board is capable of driving up to 1.2A at a peak efficiency of up to 94%, providing excellent power conversion performance across a wide range of input voltages. The board features programmable over-voltage, over-current, and under-voltage protection. Additionally, the board features a unique 2-pulse soft start to avoid current spikes and in-rush current, as well as leading edge blanking to optimize system level efficiency. This evaluation board is designed to enable a high level of system integration, providing a range of control pin configurability and blending the MAX8784 device’s linear and switching power stages into a single package.
The MAX8784 present on the evaluation board is a synchronous step-down regulator, which features a power stage consisting of two integrated control loops: the feedback loop and the current sense loop. In the feedback loop, the regulator adjusts the output voltage to match the reference voltage, while in the current sense loop, the IC attempts to match the load current to the target current. The output current is monitored by integrating the voltage across a sense resistor. The MAX8784 also features a voltage supervisor loop, which will shut down the system if the input voltage drops below the under-voltage lockout (UVLO) threshold. The output voltage can be adjusted using the feedback resistor network, and the maximum output current can be adjusted using the current sense resistor network.
The MAX8784 also features a soft start circuit that can provide a 2-pulse scheme, which allows the IC to gradually increase the output voltage before reaching the target voltage. This eliminates the need for a seperate battery supply for the output load. The MAX8784’s over-voltage and over-current protection system allows the system to maintain its protection even if one of the components in either the power supply or the load fails. Additionally, the MAX8784EVKIT+ provides programmable leading edge blanking (LEB) protection, which optimizes system-level efficiency by rejecting false current measurements due to input voltage ringing.
