Power Management IC (PMIC) devices are special purpose System-on-Chips (SoC) that manage and regulate power within a system. They provide a variety of features and functions such as rail sequencers, DC/DC converters, LDOs, battery monitors, current limiting and over voltage protection. Battery Management is a branch of PMIC that deals with charging, discharging, monitoring and protection of batteries. The MAX8904ETN+ is an advanced Battery Management PMIC from Maxim Integrated.Product Overview
The MAX8904ETN+ is an intersection-point charger with integrated linear charger, battery monitor, and over current protection for single cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery packs. It can be used with a variety of battery chemistries such as LiFePO4, cobalt-based, manganese-based, phosphate-based and oxide-based rechargeable cells. The device provides intelligent charging capability and provides numerous features such as cell-level preconditioning, wide input voltage range, and a variety of status indicators.Working Principle
The MAX8904ETN+ can support up to two input battery sources, namely USB and a Wall Adapter/DC jack. The charging circuit monitors both sources and determines which one should be used as the primary source. The input current is limited according to the selected charging profile which is configured by software or pin selections. This ensures that the dC input voltage is maintained within a safe voltage range.The charging profile consists of four stages: Preconditioning, Constant Current (CC), Constant Voltage (CV) and Termination. During the Preconditioning stage, low-level charging of the batteryʼs level is done until the battery voltage is brought up to the precondition threshold. The CC stage begins after preconditioning and involves charging the battery at a constant current rate. During the CV stage, charging stops once the battery voltage reaches a predefined value and a Constant Voltage is maintained across the battery until it reaches the final termination voltage. After the Termination stage, charging is restated after the USB or wall adapter is connected.The MAX8904ETN+ also provides cell-level preconditioning, which can increase the battery life by allowing the charge to be redistributed through the cells, allowing them to reach the optimal voltage state. The device also provides two reverse protection features; reverse boost and reverse battery protections. Reverse boost protection limits the potential current drawn from the battery during docking or connection to other power sources, while the reverse battery protection prevents the device from being charged by the battery.Application field and features
