The MAX9172ESA+ is a member of the MAX9170/MAX9172 devices, which are high-density family of integrated 6GHz gigabit serialiser-deserialiser (SERDES) transceivers. Specifically, the MAX9172ESA+ is a low-power, low-latency integrated SERDES transceiver with an integrated cable-equaliser and pre-emphasis that supports a wide range of data-rates. This device is specifically designed to increase the data rate on high-speed applications by allowing the use of standard cables with longer cable lengths.

The MAX9172ESA+ provides three key features: a cable-equalizer, transimpedance pre-emphasis, and low-latency transmit and receive paths. The integrated cable-equalizer is designed to compensate for the attenuation of electrical signals due to cable length as well as reduce the common-mode noise associated with the cable. The integrated transimpedance pre-emphasis is designed to reduce overshoot and ringing of the transmitted signal due to recessive cable reflections and inter-symbol interference (ISI). Finally, the low-latency transmit and receive paths are designed to reduce the inherent latency associated with high-speed data transmission.

The MAX9172ESA+ is best suited for high-speed communication applications such as 10GBASE-T, 10GBASE-KR, XAUI, and Fibre Channel. The use of the MAX9172ESA+ allows for transmission of data over standard cables with length up to 100m with minimal data-loss and reduced latency. Additionally, the integrated equalizer allows for the device to be used in applications where the line-length varies, such as automotive applications.

The MAX9172ESA+ has two main functional blocks: the mechanical channels and the electronics circuits. The two mechanical channels are the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter consists of a drive amplifier and VCO circuit which both output to the transmitter output amplifier. The receiver consists of the differential receiver circuit, the phase-lock loop circuit, and the adjustable receiver amplifier. The electronics circuits consist of the power supply voltage regulator, the reset circuitry, the reference clock oscillator, and the serializer/deserializer logic blocks.

The operation of the MAX9172ESA+ is based on the SERDES technology, which uses two parallel data streams, one in each direction. The data streams are encoded and sent to the receiver, where they are decoded back to their original formats. The synchronization of the two signals is done with the help of a reference clock oscillator that ensures that the data is received at the right time.
