The MAX9254EUM/V+ is part of a series of high-speed data link products from Maxim Integrated Products. It is the successor to the MAX9280.The MAX9254EUM/V+ is a very popular serializer/deserializer (SerDes) device that provides high-speed clock and data recovery,data framing and scrambling/descrambling functions.The MAX9254EUM/V+’s primary application is the design of high-speed communication links used in compact systems with limited board space and a high-speed link rate. The device is designed to be particularly suitable for high-speed interfaces up to 10Gbps.
The MAX9254EUM/V+ is a low-power, industrial-grade Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) device specifically designed for interconnections of up to 10Gbps in data-communications applications. It offers both loss-of-clock (LOCR) and loss-of-signal (LOSR) modes of operation. The MAX9254EUM/V+ also supports the use of an external clock source, allowing for multiple clock frequencies, from 12 to 16.5 Gbps. It contains 4 lanes of 0.8Gbps bandwidth in each lane, allowing for data rates up to 10Gbps. Additionally, the MAX9254EUM/V+ features spread-spectrum clock generation, offering EMI reduction and improved link robustness in applications.
The MAX9254EUM/V+ device is designed to interface with either high-speed logic or low-speed logic. The serializer is designed to perform 8/10/16-bit byte encoding and byte scrambling/descrambling to facilitate the transmission of data across the link. The deserializer is designed to convert incoming serialized data back into its original 8/10/16-bit form.
The serializer accepts up to 162.5 Mbps serial data streams and outputs 8/10/16-bit wide encoded data streams. The device interfaces directly to nearly any control, data, or broadcast channel. The encoded data stream is then scrambled, preventing the occurrence of long runs of a single bit, ensuring a consistent baseline jitter performance. The encoded and scrambled data streams are then transmitted over the link.
The deserializer accepts 8/10/16-bit wide encoded data streams and outputs up to 162.5 Mbps data streams. Deserialization is accomplished by reading the encoded data streams, unscrambling them, and performing 8/10/16-bit wide decoding. The decoded data streams are then output to the system.
The MAX9254EUM/V+ also includes a clock recovery circuit that reads the encoded data streams to recover the transmitted clock. This clock is sent to the deserializer and is used to recover the data streams. The clock recovery circuit also helps reduce jitter and can be used to recover clocks at multiple frequencies up to 16.5 Gbps.
The MAX9254EUM/V+ is ideal for applications such as automotive, consumer electronics, broadcast and storage, industrial, and medical and instrumentation infrastructure applications.
