RF mixers are specialized circuits used to convert RF signals to and from the intermediate frequency (IF) domain. This allows frequency translation of signals that are too close in frequency to allow direct conversion, and also provides the ability to demodulate high-frequency IF signals. A single RF mixer can translate a signal from one frequency to another, while two cascaded mixers can convert signals simultaneously from one frequency to two other frequencies. Of the many RF mixer components on the market, the MAX9985ETX-T is one of the most popular.
The MAX9985ETX-T is specifically designed for high-bandwidth applications operating in the 400- to 4200-MHz range. It has a minimized level of cross-talk and low noise figure, which allows it to perform optimally without interference from surrounding signals or ambient noise. Additionally, it features low harmonic distortion and low conversion loss. The mixer has a wide dynamic range, high linearity, and is capable of operating over a wide temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. It also employs a built-in temperature sensor to monitor oscillator frequency stability over temperature.
The MAX9985ETX-T employs a Gilbert Cell topology to achieve the desired frequency conversion. Its Gilbert Cell design consists of two FETs that are matched with a precision resistor to create a voltage-controlled current source. One of the FETs acts as an amplifier while the other FET provides the non-linearity needed for the mixing operation.
