Application Field

The MAX9996ETP+ is a general-purpose, double-balanced, Gilbert cell mixer optimized for low-power and microwave applications in point-to-point radios, wireless infrastructure, base station receive, and point-to-multipoint radios. It is designed for frequency ranges from 50-3000MHz in both upconversion and downconversion applications. The mixer has medium linearity, low adjacent channel power leakage (ACLP), and low noise performance over the full frequency range.

The MAX9996ETP+ provides excellent performance when used for direct-conversion and low-IF receivers for applications such as GSM and other cell phone systems. The low output distortion makes it ideal for RF to IF applications. It is designed to minimize any signal clipping due to overload. The high and low side LO ports can be used in quadrature or in non-quadrature application withLO leakage low enough to be ignored.

The mixer is packaged in a small 4-lead LLP package with an operating temperature range from -55°C to +125°C and is suitable for both commercial and automotive applications.

Working Principle

The MAX9996ETP+ is a double-balanced Gilbert cell mixer. The device consists of two differential amplifier stages with an active load at the IF port. The active load provides good linearity. The signal is input at the RF port, and two inputs at the local oscillator (LO) ports. The outputs of the amplifier stages combine with the LO signal in the active load to produce the IF output. When the signals at the LO ports coincide in phase and the amplitude of the LO signal is greater than the RF signal, the mixer will down convert the signal, providing an IF output lower than the LO frequency. If the phase of the LO signal is reversed with respect to the RF signal, the mixer will upconvert the signal, providing an IF output higher than the LO frequency.

The MAX9996ETP+ is designed to provide flat conversion gain and low noise figure. The low conversion loss and noise figure combined with the superior phase and amplitude balance makes the mixer an excellent choice for a variety of applications. The mixer also offers very low LO rejection and good port-to-port isolation.

The MAX9996ETP+ is an excellent choice for low-power, microwave, and RF to IF applications. Its low conversion loss and flat gain response, combined with low noise figure and low LO power requirements, make it very suitable for various applications.
