The MC10H189L is a 3-state high speed monolithic transistor-transistor logic (TTL)[1] buffer. As a 3-state driver/receiver, it is used to separate logic parts of a circuitry for purposes such as bus isolation, data expansion, and level translation.

The MC10H189L offers three major components for use in systems designed for high-speed, high-density operations: a three-state driver, a data buffer, and an open-collector output. The driver is responsible for accepting and driving data while the buffer stores it; the third component, the open-collector output, allows the output to be switchable between two logic states or one high impedance state. This allows the MC10H189L to perform multiple logic operations simultaneously.

The MC10H189L is fundamental for level-shifters, bus isolators, line receivers and some data-muxes for high-speed communication. It is designed to dramatically reduce power consumption, propagate signal faster and limit signal noise between two circuits with different logic levels, notably from TTL to CMOS[2]. It allows two systems based on different logic families to communicate at each other\'s signal speed across the system[3].

The device contains eight separate buffer and output drivers with independent control circuitry. Each buffer contains an input logic gate, 3-STATE drivers, and an output buffer.[5] Each of the input logic gates contains an inverter, NAND gate, and a combinational logic circuit. As in other TTL logic families, the inputs of the logic gates of the MC10H189L are TTL levels and they must be driven by other TTL outputs. Thus, the output levels must be digitally encoded within the limits of the fanout constraints of the family.

The MC10H189L output drivers have both inversion and non-inversion or three-state features, which allows them to be used in most TTL logic systems. The output stage of the MC10H189L output drivers uses Darlington pairs with a totem-pole concept rather than a standard TTL inverter. This allows for buffering of the outputs with a wide range of data rates[6].

The open-collector output driver on the MC10H189L uses alternate-state logic. This means that it can be programmed to produce a high output voltage when the input voltage is low and a low output voltage when the input voltage is high. This feature allows the MC10H189L to operate as either an open-drain driver or an open-collector receiver, allowing it to be used for logic expansion, bus isolation, and level translation.
