Working Principle
The MC12FD470G-F mica and PTFE capacitor is a multi-layer device that includes a polymeric dielectric (PTFE), conductive trace-lines (metal traces), and electrodes. This helps isolate the elements within the device and prevent short-circuits.
As voltage is applied to the device, a polarization field is formed. This polarization field succeeds in varying the capacitor’s capacitance with the voltage. As a voltage gradient is applied, the dielectric shifts, inducing an electric field which attracts electrons. This electric field modifies the resonance frequency of the capacitance and current. The sum of the capacitance and modified frequency, when combined, is the device’s overall capacitance.
To further improve the device’s high temperature performance, the capacitor is encased in an aluminum cover. This aluminum cover also helps improve the load life of the device by dissipating heat created by operation. Additionally, the metal trace traces that are within the device are tin-cadmium coated. This helps provide additional protection from short circuit and reverse currents.
