Application Field

Working Principle
The MC33063A is an integrated, switch mode power conversion IC with minimum external components. It is suited for use as a general-purpose converter and is designed for constant switching frequency of up to 100kHz.
The MC33063A chip has two operational modes: the linear mode (continuous mode) and the latch, or switching, mode. In linear mode, the chip is capable of supplying a steady output current to the load in response to a given duty cycle. In this mode, the power delivered to the load is increased until the duty cycle reaches 100%, and then it is reduced. However, as the duty cycle increases, the output current decreases, suggesting the power is being wasted or dissipated.
The MC33063A is capable of operating up to 100kHz switching frequency, known as latch mode. This results in higher efficiency as the current to the load is properly regulated, depending on the duty cycle of the switching rather than the power dissipation. The MC33063A also has an enable circuit to maintain the latch enable output as long as the output voltage is lower than the programmed level.
The MC33063A offers full protection of the output voltage and temperature with the use of a thermal shutdown. This is performed by a temperature compensated current limit of up to 8.2 A and the soft start feature helps further reduce the inrush current at startup. Pulse-by-pulse current limit is also provided for accurate peak current control.
The MC33063A has many versatile features to ensure power efficiency. With its accurate internal reference, a 0.6% voltage regulation is achievable. Fault protection against over voltage, under voltage, over temperature and overcurrent is also provided.
