Logic-Buffers, Drivers, Receivers, TransceiversThe MC74HC540ADWG is a very popular member of the High-Performance CMOS Logic family and an ideal solution for applications requiring octal buffers and line drivers. It is an 8-bit buffer/driver that is capable of converting TTL input signals to CMOS levels for driving higher capacitive loads or lower noise margins. It also has an output enable (OE) control, allowing one device to interface with a large number of inputs as well as allowing multiple output drivers to be connected together.The MC74HC540ADWG is a high-speed, low-power TTL-compatible logic device characterized for operation over a wide voltage range of 1.2V to 5.5V. By using this octal buffer/driver, one MCU can negotiate multiple lines in order to reduce system cost, board space, and power consumption. The MC74HC540ADWG is available in two different packages, SOP (16-pin) and PDIP (20-pin).Working PrincipleThe MC74HC540ADWG is a high-performance CMOS version of an octal buffer/driver with eight non-inverting gates and an output enable (OE) control. The control logic allows the outputs to be enabled or disabled without affecting the internal circuit. This is accomplished by tying the OE control to either a 1 or 0, or floating in order to enable/disable all outputs. The pull-up resistors allow the output to be inactive high or active high. The input buffers are designed to provide excellent noise immunity and remove any hazardous Static Discharge (ESD) risk.The logic-level translation between the low logic levels of the MCU and high logic levels of the MC74HC540ADWG allows the high-speed, low-power benefits of both systems to be realized in one device. The operands passed to the device and the output provided to the device are TTL/CMOS compatible. The common-mode range for all input pins is 0.4V to 1.2V.The MC74HC540ADWG performs logic multiplication on the inputs, producing an output of logic 0, a logic 1, or a "floating" (high-impedance) state that produces no output. A logic 0 output for all inputs may produced by disabling the output enable pin or by applying a logic 0 to all inputs. When the output enable pin is enabled, all inputs must be at a logic 1 to produce a valid output.Application FieldThe MC74HC540ADWG is designed to operate over a wide voltage range of 1.2V to 5.5V, making it ideal for many applications. Applications include embedded systems, digital logic, audio/video applications, bus extension, data transmission, and power management applications. The device is also ideal for driving LEDs, LCD displays, and other devices requiring TTL level inputs.
