MCP1258T-E/UN Working Principle

The MCP1258T-E/UN DC DC switching regulator is a step-down switching regulator that produces a fixed output voltage. The input voltage is applied directly to an internal switch, or MOSFET. During an on-time, the switch is turned on and the stored energy in the Inductor is discharged, transferring energy from the input source directly to the output load. The controller monitors the output voltage of the regulator, and adjusts the duty cycle of the switch to achieve the desired output voltage.

When the switch is off, the stored energy begins to dissipate. The Schottky diode provides a path for the current to flow from the output capacitor so the energy can be reused. The internal comparator is used to measure the output voltage, and when the desired output voltage is reached, the controller turns off the switch and the stored energy dissipates.

The MCP1258T-E/UN has an integrated Over Voltage Protection (OVP) and Under Voltage Lock Out (UVLO) circuits. The OVP circuit will turn the device off if the output voltage exceeds the programmed level. The UVLO circuit ensures that the device only starts up when the input voltage is above a predetermined level. The device also includes a Reverse Battery Protection (RBP) circuit, which prevents the device from operating if the input voltage is connected in reverse. There is also a Reverse Current Protection (RCP) circuit which prevents the device from pulling current in reverse when it is disabled.

The thermal overload protection circuit monitors the temperature of the device and will disable the device if a predetermined temperature is exceeded. The device also has an integrated circuit that monitors the inductor current and will turn off the device if the current exceeds a certain limit. This prevents the device from damage due to over-current conditions.
