MCP1501-12E/SN is a voltage reference, which belongs to PMIC – Voltage Reference. It is part of the Microchip Technology Incorporation family, which is a leading semiconductor solution provider. The MCP1501-12E/SN is a precision, low-cost, low-power, low-dropout bandgap, bipolar, four-terminal SOT-23 package, which has an operating temperature range between -40°C and +85°C.
The MCP1501-12E/SN application field covers a wide range, such as automotive, industrial and consumer products, which require precision and stability over the extended temperature range. It features 100 μA maximum operating current, 1.2V to 3.6V output, 5µA minimum cross regulation, and 0.1% initial accuracy over temperature. Its power supply rejection ratio and line regulation enhance the device stability, reliability and noise rejection.
The MCP1501-12E/SN working principle is a general bipolar bandgap reference, with a two-stage output circuit. The first stage is an active bandgap, driven by a transconductance amplifier, which provides certain level of voltage which is the foundation of the output voltage. The second stage is a transistor collective composed of PNP and NPN transistors, which transforms the low voltage from the active band gap to the desired output voltage.
The active bandgap is constructed from two wideband junction transistors and a high speed current source. The difference of the base voltages of the two junction transistors is compared with a capacitor, which is necessary for this active bandgap to function properly. This active bandgap source has a voltage span much wider than that of a passive bandgap source can provide, which enables the voltage output of the MCP1501-12E/SN to be much more accurate and adjustable.
Moreover, the MCP1501-12E/SN provides two separate outputs, which are identical; one is configured as fixed voltage output, while the other can be programmed with a low charge-pump switch network. The low charge-pump switch network allows a user to adjust the output voltage to fit the application needs. In addition, the MCP1501-12E/SN includes an independent bandgap-reference amplifier, which can easily be used to connect multiple devices in cascade without a need to use additional components.
The MCP1501-12E/SN provides a low power and high precision reference for almost any application. It allows for greater accuracy and repeatability, lower output impedance, reliability, stability, and reduced power consumption compared to more traditional voltage references. In addition, thanks to its industry-standard SOT-23 package, the device can easily be installed and reused in its particular application.
