MCP1501T-33E/RW is a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) designed for voltage reference applications. It is designed to provide fixed output voltage levels in the range of 0.6V to 9.0V at 1.5A peak current. The output voltage is programmable by two external resistors. The MCP1501T-33E/RW also features a precision voltage reference with a programmed accuracy of ±1% over a wide temperature range.

Working principle:

The MCP1501T-33E/RW uses a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control its output voltage in order to maintain a constant output. The PWM is regulated by an Error Amplifier that compares the output voltage to a stable reference voltage provided by an internal regulated voltage reference (REF). This voltage reference can also be used externally as an accurate reference for another circuit.

The Error Amplifier is connected to a high-frequency oscillator and charge pump. The charge pump has two separate power transistors connected in parallel. These transistors switch at a high frequency (typically 1MHz) in order to charge an external capacitor (C1) to the programmed output voltage as set by the external resistors (R1 and R2). This capacitor serves as a low-pass filter, so the output voltage is not affected by high frequencies.

The output voltage is adjusted by the Error Amplifier by modulating the amount of charge in C1 by changing the duty cycle of the oscillator. When the output voltage rises above the programmed level, the duty cycle is increased, so that more charge is added to C1. This increases the output voltage and brings it back to the programmed level. Conversely, if the output voltage falls below the programmed level, the duty cycle is decreased, so that less charge is added to C1. This reduces the output voltage and brings it back to the programmed level.
