The MCP16301T-I/CHY is an advanced voltage regulator integrated circuit designed to control and convert DC/DC power sources in automotive, consumer and industrial applications. This DC/DC regulator provides improved efficiency, lower thermal design power dissipation, and superior step-transition responses.

The MCP16301T-I/CHY is a DC/DC switching regulator that regulates output voltage accuracy to within ±1.5% over load, temperature, and input voltage variations. The regulator can be configured for either buck or boost modes for step-up or step-down applications. It features power supplyUVLO and thermal shutdown protection, as well as adaptive switching frequency, and internal soft start to reduce in-rush current.

The integrated circuit includes internal power MOSFETs and a current-mode PWM controller. The MCP16301T-I/CHY is ideal for automotive, consumer, and other applications such as portable electronics, telecom, enterprise level systems, as well as industrial equipment where efficiency, high-temperature reliability, and power supply scalability are required. Working Principle

The MCP16301T-I/CHY incorporates an integrated power MOSFET and a current-mode PWM controller. The device uses an on-chip oscillator with adaptive switch frequency to control switching under both light and heavy loads. Its integrated soft start circuitry limits in-rush current during start-up. An internal 5V regulator provides power to the PWM-controller and error amplifier, while a separate voltage reference provides the reference voltage for the feedback loop. An overcurrent comparator provides thermal and overcurrent protection.

In buck mode, the input voltage is applied across the drain of the integrated high voltage MOSFET and the output voltage is set by the voltage divider network, which is connected to the error amplifier’s negative input. The error amplifier compares the output voltage to the internal reference voltage and corrects the switching duty cycle according to the output voltage. In boost mode, the input voltage is applied across the source of the integrated high voltage MOSFET and the output voltage is set by the voltage divider network, which is connected to the error amplifier’s positive input.
