MCP1650EV is a high efficiency, high performance synchronous buck converter designed for applications that require the highest level of performance and flexibility. It is a complete solution that includes a dedicated regulator, dual N-channel MOSFETs, powertrain components and pre-programmed configuration settings. The converter can regulate two or more voltages and provides variable frequency and/or deadtime operation.The MCP1650EV application field is broadened for the power supply market. It is suitable for DC/DC converters with high power conversion efficiency and input voltage range from 1V to 16V with output voltage ranging from 0.8V to 6V. It is also suitable for AC/DC (off-line) SMPS with wide power range, up to 15W, allowing both single and multiple outputs.The working principle of MCP1650EV is based on voltage and current regulations. It accepts the input voltage and current, then converts them to a corresponding output voltage and current satisfying the load demand. There are two type of regulation techniques used: pulse-width modulation (PWM) and pulse-frequency modulation (PFM). PWM is used for load sizes that require low total harmonic distortion whereas PFM is implemented for larger loads that can be driven by periodical switching of the internal FETs at a constant frequency.The proportional control loop acts as a closed loop control mechanism providing fast and precise regulation of the output voltage. The MCP1650EV has an adjustable on-time control circuit that adjusts the output voltage to its desired value. The control loop senses the output voltage and modulates the on-time to regulate the output voltage. The voltage reference is internally set to the desired voltage level and the corresponding on-time is compared with the measured voltage. In addition, there is an open-loop detect/low-voltage-lockout function that monitors the input voltage and shuts down the IC if the voltage drops below its minimum value.The MCP1650EV also has a secondary side variable-frequency algorithm which helps reduce the size of capacitors and other power components, thus improving efficiency and power quality. The frequency of the main switching (FETs) is adjustable according to the voltage level on the rail. This allows for efficient regulation of the output current with minimal ripple. The adjustable frequency and on-time also help reduce EMI (electromagnetic interference) emissions from the converter.MCP1650EV is a powerful and versatile converter that offers superior performance at a competitive cost. It combines a variety of features, such as wide voltage and current range inputs, dual N-channel MOSFETs, optional pre-programmed configuration settings and efficient regulation algorithms, to meet the most challenging application requirements.
