The MCP1664T-E/MNY was specifically designed to work in complex, high power applications where energy efficiency and heat management are critical. The device can direct current to either one or both the LED to regulate power and brightness, further offering the user with precise control and accuracy. The MCP1664T-E/MNY also offers a host of types of functionality that can improve applications and increase performance. This includes ability to achieve through precise current control in both directions, active PWM dimming with no added heat or current, an integrated overvoltage protection circuitry, ability to achieve dimming range of 0 to 100 percent, low operating current with patented Power-Save feature and the further ability to fine tune with external resistor.
The working principle of MCP1664T-E/MNY is simple and efficient. Upon application of voltage, the incoming current is split into two directions, opposite to each other. One of the directions will regulate the LED current and the other will feed back to the original source. This maintains a continuous current flow, through the two transistors, past the two diodes, and finally to the LEDs at a constant pre-determined current.
The device works as an active current controller and works with any input voltage. This allows it to be combined with a host of other devices, thus making it very versatile. The regulating circuit enables the device to get desired output current levels, with very small variations. This, combined with the Active PWM dimming capabilities and the low operating current significantly extends the life of the LEDs and makes the system much more energy efficient.
