Fuses are a critical component used to protect circuits and equipment from damaging spikes of electrical current. The MDA-V-7-R fuses are a type of medium-voltage, midget, non-vented fuse designed to protect circuits with a maximum voltage rating of 14,400 volts AC and interrupting rating of 200kA or less. It complies with the UL Standard 248-14, and is well suited to a variety of applications.

The MDA-V-7-R is ideal for protection of power, control, and lighting circuits in medium voltage distribution systems. It can be used in parallel-discrimination applications of medium voltage radial systems, and in normal and back-up protection of branch circuit transformers. The fuse is also suitable for use as a component in medium and low voltage air-break switch disconnectors, and in manual motor control centers.

The MDA-V-7-R is designed to have a time-delay characteristic with high-speed interrupting capability. It can also be used to protect electrical lines on industrial facilities such as large office complexes, airports, and universities. The fuse is well-suited to the protection of motors, transformers, feeders, and motor switch disconnects up to a rating of 14,400 volts AC.

The device is constructed of epoxy-resin with a glass seal in the fuse link. Inside the fuse, a heavy-duty wire conducts current which, when a fault occurs, is rapidly heated to a predetermined melting point that targets to clear the fault, interrupting current flow. The melting point is set by a rated current and a time-delay. The rated current is given by the manufacturer, and the time-delay is measured in seconds. This means that the fuse will only clear a fault if the current is greater than the rated current of the fuse for a fixed period of time. If the current falls below the rated current level before the time-delay elapses, the fuse will not open.

Once cleared, the heavy duty wire is replaced with a new one. This process of clearing and replacing can be repeated a maximum of three times before the fuse must be replaced. It is important to note that a MDA-V-7-R fuse should never be operated at current level beyond its rated value or at a voltage level beyond its rated value. Doing this can cause the fuse to fail.
