MDL-V-10-R Fuses Application Field and Working Principle

MDL-V-10-R fuses, also known as Form 101 fuses, are low-voltage transformer fuses used to protect voltage transformers from over-current and short-circuit. The MDL-V-10-R fuse provides overcurrent protection for both normal and abnormal operating conditions in distribution and transmission systems. It is rated for nominal current of 10 A and nominal voltage of 600 V.

Application Field

MDL-V-10-R fuses have a wide range of applications in the electric power industry, from high voltage transmission lines to low voltage transformers. They are used to protect voltage transformers from over-current and short-circuits in electric power systems. They are also used to protect other electrical equipment, such as distribution transformers and switchgear, from inrush current and over-voltage conditions. In addition, these fuses are also used as main circuit protection in transformers, electric power plants, substations, and switchgears.

Working Principle

MDL-V-10-R fuses are designed to allow current through up to a specific level (the instantaneous overcurrent) before triggering an interruption. The fuse operates by passing electricity in and out of the fuse body. When the current exceeds the normal level, a heat-sensitive element in the housing melts and allows current interruption. This instantaneous overcurrent is usually calculated by the manufacturer from the operating conditions of the transmission system at which the fuse is installed. Most MDL-V-10-R fuses use a general-purpose element as the heat-producing element. The general-purpose element is a tooled metal melting alloy made of a combination of metals such as zinc, aluminum, tin, lead, and antimony. As current passes through this metal element, it dissipates heat, and when a certain predetermined level is reached, the element is fused due to excessive heat, allowing the current flow to stop. The current blow time is determined by the operating conditions of the system as well as the dimensions of the fuse element and housing. The time required for the fuse element to fuse is calculated by dividing the operating current of the system by the current carrying capacity of the general-purpose element. The fuse is designed to operate when an instantaneous overload of 10 times the application current occurs. MDL-V-10-R fuses are designed to close after the external overcurrent is removed. The fuse will reset itself by a restoring force when the external overcurrent is removed. The restoring force is a spring associated with the fuse element and the housing.

Advantages

MDL-V-10-R fuses are a very cost-effective way to protect voltage transformers, electric power systems, and other electrical equipment from over-currents and short-circuits. They are very reliable, provide instantaneous overcurrent protection, and are easy to install and maintain. Additionally, MDL-V-10-R fuses are usually made of general-purpose elements, which are cheaper and easier to replace than other types of fuses’ elements.

Conclusion

MDL-V-10-R fuses are low-voltage transformer fuses that provide overcurrent protection for electric power systems from over-currents and short-circuits. They are used to protect voltage transformers as well as other electrical equipment from over-current and short-circuit conditions. They have a wide range of applications in the electric power industry, are easy to install and maintain, and provide reliable instantaneous overcurrent protection.
