A PTC resettable fuse, also known as a polyfuse, is a type of resettable circuit protection device. One example of a PTC fuse is the MF-LR260 series from KEMET. It employs a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) to detect and react to current overloads and short-circuits.

The MF-LR260 series fuse is a readily resettable over-current protection device specifically designed to provide reliable, cost-effective, and robust over-current protection for a wide range of applications. It incorporates a built-in thermal element that provides fast response time and reset capability to minimize downtime and maximize system reliability throughout the life of the product.

The MF-LR 260 series fuse can be used in a variety of applications including audio equipment, lighting, HVAC/R, instrumentation, consumer entertainment, handheld devices, and more. It is particularly useful for power supplies and other components that are subject to high electrical start-up currents. Its low voltage drop (as low as 45 mV at 2 A) and fast time-to-trip (as low as 0.5 ms) make the MF-LR260 an excellent choice for protecting against accidental overloads and shorts.

The MF-LR260 uses a resistive switching element to detect and react to current overloads and short-circuits. This element will quickly switch from a low-resistance negatively temperature-coefficient (NTC) to a high-resistance PTC state, thus tripping the fuse and protecting the circuit from further damage. Once the current is removed, the internal heater of the fuse releases the stored thermal energy, which gradually cools the fuse and lowers the internal resistance of the element back to its initial NTC state. This will reset the fuse, allowing current to flow and restoring normal operation.

The MF-LR260 is available in a wide range of package sizes and amperage ratings, ranging from 1 A to 60 A. It is also available with an optional two-stage switching element which provides extra protection against large loads, as well as multiple pin configurations for easy integration with existing circuit designs. Its high temperature range (-55° to +125°C) and UL, cUL, VDE, CSA, and CQC approvals make the MF-LR260 ideal for use in applications with stringent safety requirements.

The MF-LR260 series fuse provides reliable, efficient, and robust over-current protection for a wide range of applications. Its low overall resistance, fast time-to-trip, and ready resettable capabilities make it an appealing choice for protecting against short-circuits and accidental overloads. Furthermore, its wide temperature range and approvals make it ideal for use in applications that require strict safety requirements. Overall, the MF-LR260 series provides a cost-effective solution for protecting valuable circuit components against over-current runaways.
