PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC resettable fuses, also known as polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) or polyfuses, have become a widely used and accepted solution for various circuit protection applications. They are fast replacing the traditional fuses in various protection circuitry in appliances, electronic components and automotive parts. PTC resettable fuses are mainly characterized by their ability to automatically limit current when it exceeds the threshold level and return to normal or ‘off state’ when the current reduces back to normal. These devices are commonly available in different nominal sizes to suit different protection requirements. For example, the MF-PSMF110X-2 is a miniature-sized PTC resettable fuse that is specially designed to provide reliable overcurrent protection to the automotive electronic and electrical circuit protection applications. The MF-PSMF110X-2 is able to support a variety of automotive designs such as in-vehicle infotainment systems, driver-assistance features, and other basic electrical functions. It offers superior current interrupting capability and voltage tolerance, and also effectively eliminates arcing which in traditional fuses results in severe damage to the system. Furthermore, the MF-PSMF110X-2 is able to safely tolerate transient voltage spikes of up to 30V. Let\'s take a look at the application field and working principle of the MF-PSMF110X-2.

Application Field of the MF-PSMF110X-2

The MF-PSMF110X-2 resettable fuse is designed primarily for the automotive electronic and electrical applications, and its outstanding features make it an ideal protection device in such designs. This device allows designers to better protect their electronics and electrical components from various transient and overcurrent events. This miniature-sized PTC resettable fuse should be used where high current capacity and temperature stability, as well as safety and efficiency, are required. For instance, it is a good choice for automotive applications that demand sophisticated internal circuitry such as automatic braking systems, TPMS sensors, in-vehicle infotainment systems, and satellite navigation systems. The MF-PSMF110X-2 is also suitable for use in household appliances such as toasters, microwaves, refrigerators, and washing machines.

Working Principle of the MF-PSMF110X-2

The working principle of the MF-PSMF110X-2 can be divided into two parts, namely the current sensing and the temperature sensing mechanisms. During normal operation, the device is actively cool due to the temperature-controlled fan that is built in the circuitry. However, when the current exceeds the device\'s nominal current rating, an overload is caused and the temperature of the device begins to increase. This increase in temperature activates the temperature sensing mechanism, causing a thermal switching element in the device to shut off the circuit. The thermal switching element remains in the \'off\' state till the temperature drops back to normal, at which point it resets the circuit. The other mechanism of the device is the current sensing mechanism, which monitors the current flowing through the circuit and trip off the device when the current exceeds the nominal rating of the device. The current sensing mechanism is reset automatically when the current flows back to its normal value. In this way, the MF-PSMF110X-2 provides great protection to sensitive automotive electronics and electrical components from damage due to overcurrent, transient overloads, and thermal breakdowns.
