PTC resettable fuses such as MF-R015/600-2-99 are commonly used to over-current protection in a variety of electronics and electronic systems. They are generally small, reliable, and designed to quickly react to an overload or short circuit event, and then self-reset when the fault is cleared.
Application Field
PTC resettable fuses are widely used in industrial, automotive, home appliance, communication, medical, power supply, and general electronics equipment. They are often used in power supplies to protect DC circuits, consumer electronics to protect against power surges, and personal electronics such as laptops and tablets to limit current draw during charging. Additionally, they are used in high current applications, such as AC/DC power adapters, battery chargers, points of sale systems, and other high-power devices.
In automobiles, MF-R015/600-2-99 PTC resettable fuses are used in airbags, electronic stability control systems, window motors, and in automotive body electronics to protect circuits that detect the open/close position of doors and windows. They are also used in automotive entertainment systems to protect speakers and amplifiers from power surges.
Working Principle
MF-R015/600-2-99 PTC resettable fuses are made up of a special type of material that reacts to an increase in electrical current. This material is a combination of ceramic and conductive particles in an organic and thermoplastic binder. When overloaded, the PTC’s resistance rapidly increases, which restricts the current and reduces the power dissipation. This self-protective behavior, known as “positive temperature coefficient” (PTC), is triggered when the device reaches a predetermined temperature, typically 140°C.
In a typical device, two metal plates sandwich the PTC material and provide electrical connections to the circuit. The plates are normally insulated from the material, but when the material reaches the PTC temperature, it melts and conducts electricity. This results in a short circuit event that quickly trips the device and shuts down the power. Once the material cools, it solidifies and the fuse self-resets, allowing the circuit to be powered on again.
The main advantage of PTC fuses is that they reset automatically without requiring any user intervention, unlike other types of fuses or circuit breakers. This makes them well-suited for applications where repetitive resetting can be inconvenient or dangerous. Additionally, the PTC material has a long service life and can withstand continuous current up to 10,000 cycles without degradation, meaning it can provide reliable protection for an extended period of time.
MF-R015/600-2-99 PTC resettable fuses are a reliable, cost-effective solution for over-current protection in a wide variety of electronic and electrical applications. With their self-resetting properties and long electrical cycle life, these devices can offer reliable protection for many years.
