PTC Resettable Fuses: The MF-R110-0-99 Application Field and Working Principle
Polymeric PTC resettable fuses, commonly referred to as “PTC” fuses, are a type of electrical protection device which is used in many applications to protect against overcurrent, overloads, and short circuits. PTCs are more forgiving than standard fuses, as they will not blow when an overload occurs. Instead, the PTCs will heat up and trip, temporarily cutting off power. Once the overload is removed, the PTC will reset itself and restore the power.
The MF-R110-0-99 is a PTC resettable fuse made by a manufacturer known as “Eaton”. The fuse is typically used in industrial and commercial electrical operations, such as lighting, motor control, power supply, and power distribution equipment. It is also commonly used in audio, communications, and home appliance equipment. The MF-R110-0-99 is available in several amperage ratings from 1 to 16A.
Working Principle
The MF-R110-0-99 features a metal oxide varistor (MOV) as its main component. The MOV is a nonlinear electronic device which has a high resistance under normal circuit conditions. When an overload occurs, the resistance of the MOV will drop drastically, allowing a large current to flow through the fuse. This causes the MOV to generate heat, which then triggers the fuse to trip.
The MF-R110-0-99 also has thermal cut-off (TCO) protection, which provides additional protection against overheating and faults. The TCO is a normally closed circuit breaker which is triggered by an increase in temperature. It will open the circuit and cut the power if the temperature rises above a certain limit.
When the power is cut off, the fuse will cool down and the MOV will return to its original high resistance state. This will reset the fuse and restore the power. In addition, the TCO resets itself automatically once the temperature has dropped back to a safe level.
Advantages of PTC Fuses
The main advantage of PTC fuses compared to standard fuses is their ability to reset themselves. This means that they will continue to provide protection against overcurrents, even after multiple overloads or short circuits. As a result, they are far less likely to fail than standard fuses and are also more cost effective due to their increased longevity.
PTC fuses also have a much faster response time than standard fuses, as they respond instantly to abnormalities in current and temperature. This allows them to provide protection more quickly, reducing the risk of damage to the connected equipment.
Conclusion
The MF-R110-0-99 is a reliable and effective PTC resettable fuse which is well suited to a range of industrial and commercial applications. The fuse provides superior protection against overcurrents, short circuits, and overheating, and is capable of resetting itself quickly and easily. It is an ideal solution for many electrical protection requirements and can help to reduce the risk of costly damages and repairs.
