Introduction of PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC Resettable Fuses, also known as Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) Resettable Fuses, are self-regulating fuses used to protect electronic devices, circuits and systems from overcurrent damages. Containing a semiconducting polymer, they combust to operate when an overcurrent fault occurs. The melted fuse alters its properties and will not reset unless the fault is cleared and the current is brought back to a safe level.

MF-R250-AP Application Field and Working Principle

MF-R250-AP is a PTC resettable fuse designed for consumer electronic products and electric and power equipment. It is a low-cost, AC or DC rated, Resettable Fuse suitable for a wide range of applications, from HVAC systems, hand tools, computers, TVs, audio systems to automation systems. When the current exceeds the fuse\'s rated current, the biphasic thermoplastic semiconductor material will heat up as the current passes through it. This slow and steady increase in temperature causes a steep rise in the number of carriers. This thermo-biasing effect means that a substantial resistance appears across the material. This resistance safely limits the circuit current and dissipates the excess energy as heat, which in turn increases the temperature even further. When the temperature reaches its peak, the fuse opens. On return to room temperature the fuse is reset automatically.

Advantages of PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC resettable fuses provide a great advantage when compared to traditional fuses by resetting for each overcurrent event. Traditional fuses need to be manually reset, whereas, with the PTC resettable fuse, it opens its contacts when an over current event occurs and then automatically resets at room temperature. This eliminates the need for maintenance and can be used over many years without any wear. Additionally, PTC resettable fuses do a better job at protecting the load compared to traditional fuses. Due to their self-regulating abilities, PTC resettable fuses self-adapt to the load and protect the load from over current, exceeding temperatures, voltage fluctuations and other environmental risks.

Conclusion

The MF-R250-AP is a well-suited PTC resettable fuse for a wide range of applications that need protection from complete overcurrent, exceeding temperature, and voltage fluctuations. It has great benefits compared to traditional fuses and is likely to last much longer due to its self-resetting capabilities. Thus, it provides a reliable, long-lasting, and cost effective method of protecting electrical systems.
