PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Resettable Fuses are a type of fuses that have been used for over-current protection of electronic devices and appliances for decades. They have become essential components in the manufacturing of electronic products due to their capacity to be reset after a current spike or overload. PTC resettable fuses are being used in a wide range of applications such as in power supplies, electric motors, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, data centers, home appliances, and industrial equipment.

One of the most prevalent examples of PTC resettable fuse technology is the MF-R400 series of fuses by Bourns. The MF-R400 series fuses feature high over-current protection characteristics that exceed the international standard IEC60127-3 by 80%, as well as hold times that are twice as strong as the standard. They are also designed with self-resettlement capabilities that restore the fuse to an operational state after the over-current event.

The MF-R400 series employs a patented bridge type interrupter mechanism together with a positive temperature coefficient or PTC element. The bridge type interrupter helps in the fast detection and interruption of over-current and over-voltage conditions, while the PTC element regulates the temperature and self-resettles the fuse after the fault condition is eliminated. Due to the combination of these two elements, the device has superior protection capabilities and can withstand high surge current levels of more than 200A.

Once an over-current or over-voltage situation occurs, the bridge type interrupter immediately trips in order to break the circuit and protect it from any further damage. The PTC element then kicks in, lowering the temperature in turn prevents overheating. This enables the device to reset itself and automatically return to the operational mode once the fault has been cleared. The reset times range from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the type of fuse.

The MF-R400 series also features a temperature coefficient compensation mechanism which helps regulate the recovery voltage of the fuse. This improves its ability to reset even after repeated short-circuit events and enhances its performance. The device also features an internal voltage divider which helps to measure the applied voltage accurately and prevent false trips in case of voltage spikes
