Introduction to PTC Resettable Fuses: A PTC resettable fuse, sometimes called an "electronic fuse" or a "polyfuse", is an electrical protection device that provides a resettable and usually automatic disconnection of an electrical circuit under overload or short-circuit conditions. It is often referred to as a polyswitch, polyurethane switch or polyfuse. When an excessive current passes through a PTC resettable fuse, it heats up and, as a result, its resistance increases dramatically, thus limiting the current flow. When the current flow is back to a normal range, the heat dissipates relatively quickly and the device returns to its low resistance state and re-energizes the circuit.MF-R500-2 Application Field and Working PrincipleThe MF-R500-2 fuse is a PTC resettable fuse designed for protecting circuits subject to overcurrent in the circuit which is caused by short circuits, overload and/or excessive current in the circuit. The PTC resettable fuse is often used in electronics, power supplies, lighting systems, household appliances and automotive products where an overcurrent protection is required. The MF-R500-2 resettable fuse is a self re-setting thermal device constructed of polymeric PTC (positive temperature coefficient) material. It has a current limiting characteristic that limits certain current under over-load or short-circuit conditions. The PTC resettable fuse will reset itself when current is reduced to a safe level. When the circuit is energized for the first time, the current passes straight through the PTC composite fuse and the voltage is at normal levels. When the current exceeds the selected trip level, the fuse will switch to an active state and the resistance begins to rise. This causes current to drop and the voltage across the device rises until a level is reached where a thermal cut-off occurs. This will break the connection and protect the circuit from further damage.Once the current drops to a safe level, the thermal cut-off turns off and the device will reset itself. The device returns to its original low resistance state and the circuit is again energized. The process repeats as needed based on changes in the current in the circuit. The MF-R500-2 PTC resettable fuse has a wide range of applications, such as automotive, consumer Electronics, Telecommunications, Lighting, Medical Instruments, Household Appliances, and Industrial Controls. It is also suitable for use in AC and DC circuits.ConclusionPTC resettable fuses have proven to be invaluable when it comes to secondary protection in electronic circuits. The MF-R500-2 is an excellent example of such an advanced fuse device, combining a wide range of uses with a self-resetting process. By utilizing the MF-R500-2 as part of an electrical circuit\'s protective devices, a circuit can remain safe and in operation for as long as possible.
